This workshop and BYOB reception will introduce two of the founding members of Entremise, a non-profit organization working to facilitate temporary use strategies in Montreal. As the Institute’s first “Futurists in Residence,” Lapalme and Wilson have as their mission: Connecting temporarily people without space to spaces without people.
The best way to protect a building is to keep it occupied, even if the use is on a temporary or partial basis. Formerly consigned to the fringes of Western mainstream planning, temporary use is becoming increasingly accepted by designers, architects, heritage specialists and city planners as a tool in planning and conservation. In Montreal, temporary community use of underutilized outdoor spaces is gaining momentum, so why isn’t this strategy being put to work for vacant buildings?
The Institute for Urban Futures is a research platform for engaging with ideas on futurism, speculative design, embedded community engagement, and site-responsive urban practices
